Drivers traveling along Interstate 22 through Walker County will now notice something new: signs identifying the rivers and creeks they’re crossing.
The Walker County Soil and Water Conservation District worked with ALDOT to install seven new signs at waterway crossings to help travelers discover the area’s natural resources. The project aims to raise awareness of local bodies of water and promote outdoor recreation opportunities in the area.

“I was asked by a local historian and community member, Wheeler Pounds, about signage along I-22 to help bring awareness of the numerous waterways we have in Walker County,” said State Senator-Elect Matt Woods. “Many places across Alabama have signs at waterway crossings, and we wanted to highlight those in Walker County as well.”
The new signage serves multiple purposes: educating travelers about local geography, promoting outdoor recreation opportunities, and highlighting the waterways that provide important wildlife habitat and natural beauty throughout the region.
Woods praised the partnership that made the project possible. “I appreciate Cawaco RC&D for providing the resources to help promote our rivers, creeks, and streams. We have many opportunities for outdoor recreation in this area and the new signage will help highlight those opportunities to everyone passing through I-22. I also want to thank the Walker County Soil and Water Conservation District for partnering with ALDOT to make the waterway signage project possible.”
For outdoor enthusiasts and curious travelers alike, these signs offer a new way to connect with Walker County’s natural landscape and discover recreation opportunities they might have otherwise missed.

This project also supports the Walker County Soil and Water Conservation District’s ongoing conservation education programs, including their annual Arbor Day program, Water Festival, Land Judging Contest, outdoor classroom and Forestry Workshop.
The grant for this project was made possible by our partners at the Walker County Legislative Delegation. Their support helps make our region’s natural resources accessible to all.
