The Alley Activation and the featured metal archway that Cawaco funding supported created a focal point to welcome visitors and residents alike to the newly developed Calera Courtyard.
For decades this alley was nothing more than an automobile cut through to beat the train, but now, it’s an integral piece of “place making” for the City of Calera. The alley is limited to emergency traffic only so it can be pedestrian oriented as a place to meet, visit, reflect, or just be welcomed into the historic district.
The alley includes the first official public art: The E.L. Gandy Coca-Cola mural restoration and selfie spot. The arch was designed, built, and installed by Sloss Furnace Foundation in Birmingham. The design fits the train station look and feel for our town’s history. Thousands of people will be enjoying this project and
the overall revitalization for years to come as more merchants, restaurants, festivals, and community activities are attracted to the area.
