FLFR hired three interns to help with projects all over the county. These interns participated with the following activities:
- Monthly cleanup locations: Mardis Mill, Swann Covered Bridge, the creek by Walmart, Taylor Riverside Park, CR 14 in Snead, Horton Mill Covered Bridge and selected areas in Hayden.
- Weekly work sessions at FLFR’s Restoration Nursery in Royal.
- Special events at King’s Bend on the Locust Fork River: Alabama Cup Races, Kids’ Day on the River, Explorers (Blountsville Elementary summer camp), Pathfinders (Cleveland Elementary summer camp), A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club Day on the River.
- Oneonta Public Library and Blountsville Public Library.
- Covered Bridge Festival in Oneonta, Blountsville Harvest Festival at the Historical Park.
Mia Martinez, pictured, was a full time intern. Her responsibilities included:
- coordinated between 6 and 9 scholarship students who participated in monthly cleanups led by her at 7 locations;
- was a judge at the two-day Alabama Cup Races;
- trained as a water monitor with AWW and completed monthly water testing at Kings’ Bend Scenic Overlook;
- visited multiple local businesses to get permission to display posters promoting the Art, Photo, Video & Poetry Contest and KDoR;
- helped as a shepherd or station assistant at FLFR’s Kids’ Day on the River and also 3 annual summer events for children attending summer camps at Blountsville Elementary and Cleveland Elementary as well as for the Day at the River attended by AG.Gaston Boys & Girls Club.
Maricarmen Contreras and Lacey Russell, part-time summer interns, led cleanups, and were either shepherds or station assistants during the summer events. Lacey also worked at FLFR’s Restoration Nursery to learn about native plants.
