A new life-saving device has just arrived at the City of Pelham!
The Pelham Fire Department now has a LUCAS Device, an incredible automated CPR system that will help save lives during cardiac emergencies.
What is a LUCAS Device?

The LUCAS (Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System) Device is a portable, mechanical chest compression system used in emergency medicine to deliver consistent, high-quality chest compressions to patients experiencing cardiac arrest. Essentially acting as an automated CPR machine, it takes over the manual chest compression process, allowing paramedics to focus on other critical interventions during life-threatening situations.
Technology in Action

At a recent Pelham City Council meeting, firefighters demonstrated this amazing technology, showing how it delivers automated chest compressions while freeing up paramedics to provide other critical care.
Supporting First Responders
At the beginning of 2025, the Pelham Fire Department took over EMS transport services with three new ambulances, more paramedics, and state-of-the-art equipment.
One of Cawaco RC&D’s funding priorities is to support first responders. This grant served as the final step needed for Pelham to fully equip all three of their ambulances with these critical life-saving devices.
Partnership Makes it Possible

The grant for this project was made possible by our partners at the Shelby County Legislative Delegation, including Rep. Kenneth Paschal, Rep. Arnold Mooney, and Sen. Dan Roberts. Their continued support for the safety of citizens in Shelby County demonstrates the power of collaboration between local organizations and state government.
