The USFWS has provided funding for student interns (2015-2023) to perform road crossing surveys. These surveys provide base information for habitat assessments and the SHU mapper. Students obtain hands-on experience, knowing that the data will be used by regulated industries, regulatory agencies, and non-profits to develop projects that improve habitat. This experience translates into a resume item that can, and has, furthered their careers in the natural resource field. Their work Cawaco RC&D provides administrative support for the project.
Interns, supervised by a qualified coordinator, complete a list of priority Sediment Risk Index (SRI) road-crossing surveys identified by the USFWS. The USFWS worked closely with the coordinator and other members of ARSN (most notably GSA) to ensure interns receive proper training and are adequately prepared to perform the work necessary. Interns have surveyed over 2,500 road-crossing surveys. The results are publically available through the SHU Mapper, hosted by USGS.
