A powerful network of partners is helping safeguard critical stream habitat for the Trispot darter—a small but significant indicator of Alabama’s aquatic health.
As a nonprofit partner for the Alabama Rivers & Streams Network, Cawaco currently manages a grant from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation to improve habitat for the Trispot darter in the Middle Coosa Watershed.

The project supports interns from Auburn University who completed 353 stream crossing assessments in the Ballplay Creek watershed, reaching over half of the road-stream crossings in the entire watershed. The students identified 70 crossings that had a moderate-to-high risk of habitat loss.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Partners Program will visit the top high-risk sites and work with landowners to place them on the list for future restoration.
