We are very grateful to the Alabama Association of RC&D Councils for providing us with a grant to continue the RC&D Grows Gardens program. By partnering with AMRV RC&D, ALA-Tom RC&D, Mid-South RC&D, and Northwest Alabama RC&D, we were able to provide mini-grants to 13 school and community gardens! Mini-Grants were used to purchase materials and supplies for the gardens. In addition, the grant covered the purchase of vegetable seed that were distributed through the RC&D network to a total of 61 gardens all over the state!
We now have a comprehensive database of over 100 active school and community gardens that are used for not only providing nutritious food to communities, but also are being used to teach math, fractions, color/shapes, nutrition, marketing, culinary skills, and business. Many of the schools utilize the produce in the cafeteria, and most community gardens provide fresh produce to communities located in food deserts. We are very thankful to the Alabama Association of RC&D Councils for supporting this effort.
