Cawaco RC&D Council was contracted by University of Alabama Birmingham and Sunrise Rotary to implement a portion of UAB’s Grand Challenge strategic plan. Cawaco’s Environmental Specialist, Francesca Gross, coordinated volunteer tree planting days in the North Titusville, Kingston and East Lake communities. Cawaco provided expertise in selecting tree type, specific planting locations, street tree planting plan, and maintenance plan. Partners included: Birmingham Sunrise Rotary Club, UAB Smart Cities, and City of Birmingham Transportation Department. The UAB Grand Challenge, as part of “Forging the Future” in the UAB strategic plan, serves to unite university activities (teaching, research, scholarship, commercialization, patient care, and service) along with the capabilities of partnering organizations to make life better for people.
