Cawaco RC&D Council was contracted by University of Alabama Birmingham to implement a portion of UAB’s Grand Challenge strategic plan. Cawaco’s Environmental Specialist, Francesca Gross, coordinated volunteer tree planting days in the North Titusville and Kingston communities. Cawaco provided expertise in selecting tree type, specific planting locations, street tree planting plan, and maintenance plan. Partners included: Birmingham Sunrise Rotary Club, UAB Smart Cities, City of Birmingham Planning Department and the Kingston Grand Challenge Stakeholder Group. The UAB Grand Challenge, as part of “Forging the Future” the UAB strategic plan, serves to unite university activities (teaching, research, scholarship, commercialization, patient care, and service) along with the capabilities of partnering organizations to make life better for people. Both tree plantings were finished in the Fall of 2020.
